Sivananda ashram en Kerala

Ann Marie escribe:

Hi Lucia
I hope to be in Kerala by the first of November. I plan to spend a week in a yoga camp which is near a dam (name escapes me at the moment).
I will be travelling alone, and so would love to meet up with friends of the family. All the best. Ann-Marie

Dear Ann Marie
The ashram you are talking about is Sivananda Ashram in Neyyar Dam, near Trivandrum city, in the south of Kerala. The link:

Sivananda Ashram, Neyyar Dam

Neyyar Dam is a very nice place... it is a protected park with lions and a beautiful lake (where they say there are crocodiles, so swimmers are warned to be careful).

The ashram is nice and the yoga classes are okey... the only one thing you will be surprised about is that there are no indian yoga teachers there... all the teachers are foreigners (mostly, american). This is not strange in India, where many of the ashrams are international comunities settled in India but ruled and sponsored by foreigners... In some way, yes: this ashrams are more like american camps type... but even as a "camp type" is nice to spend one week there...

Any way, the ashram is nice and it was founded by Swami Vishnu-devananda. The yoga practice is okey, the theorical classes could be better...

If you stay in dorm, ask for the dorms downstairs, because upstairs dorm is very dirty and walls are made of palm tree leaves, so many animals can be living in there... the other good option is to ask for a private room (check fares in the website).

Anne Marie, and all friends who asked about ashrams: this is the only ashram i have been in India... I hope the information is useful... greetings
LUCIA
